Threads of Homage
Young entrepreneur, Drew, grew up in Hawaii Kai as a Kamehameha School grad and stayed on Oahu to pursue his studies of Family Resources at UH Manoa. Though he never took on fashion courses, he’s always found his identity through YouTube and takes inspiration from Tyga’s brand, Last Kings.
Seeing all the upcoming brands brought up by celebrities as well as noticing local apparel businesses taking flight, Drew felt a drive to start his own brand of street wear. Since he was close to his Grandmother Rose who passed away, Drew wanted to put heartfelt meaning into his clothing line and took the symbol of a rose into his logo for Sweet Enemy Clothing.
Besides paying homage to his grandmother, Drew also wants to spread his message through fashion; reminding people that when we lose a loved one, rather than continuously feeling sorrow and grief, we can encourage ourselves to move forward in our lives for their sake.
“Sweet Enemy clothing metaphorically and Visually is like a rose. The flower is iconic for being beautiful and sweet and the thorns is the pain and hurt we go through when we lose someone special in or lives. The halo represents all those who aren’t here with us today”, Drew explains.
Whether it’s in honor for a loved one who has passed or just to add to a shirt collection, everyone (young and old) is welcome to shop and sport a shirt, hoodie, or hat. Sweet Enemy Clothing recently opened their physical location at the Ohana Hale Marketplace on Ward Ave. The decor is tastefully done to look like a florist shop especially with the 3-door fridge and the astro-turf flooring!
I really appreciate the effort and heart that people put into their businesses. There’s been several local apparel companies I’ve come across, who don’t seem personable nor have a direction other than to just make money. I look forward to seeing Drew grow with Sweet Enemy Clothing and hope to see more styles and new designs to continue promoting his message. I’d like to give a shout out to my friend Matt who connected me with Drew, as well as partnered with me to showcase the recently released designs with a lifestyle shoot around Kaimuki. Matt is an insanely talented photographer who takes beautiful landscape shots during his ventures around the island and travels. If you or know someone who wants a tour of the island + photos, or perhaps need visual content for your business, hit him up on Instagram as @mattaleong.
