Lately there's been a rise in popularity in reviving trends from decades ago, which I find refreshing to see in the fashion world today. But I don't see the value in shopping for a brand new mom jeans from American Eagle for $50. To be honest, I'm not a fan of shopping for brand new things when there's the option to reuse something that is in still in great condition. I'd much rather find hidden gems that have history; and sometimes I like to makeup stories of who used to wear these consignment pieces in my head. But I don't feel like I have the best eye for when it comes to searching for vintage threads. Luckily, I made a friend through a friend who happens to make a living doing so for other people!
This guy right up here is Arik; a young entrepreneur with a keen sense of style. His interest in fashion developed around high school and since then has dreamt of starting his own brand one day. Like many fashion enthusiasts, he worked in retail which gave him a foundation in customer service and styling. Work clothes is of the utmost importance retail, especially at shopping centers like Ala Moana, but sometimes employee discounts don't help our wallets. So Arik saved money building his work wardrobe by going to thrift stores where he easily found nice slacks and button-ups for when he used to work at Banana Republic and Nordstrom.
Along the way he'd find really cool pieces like jackets and jeans from well known brands, colleges, and even cartoons! Arik realized how much fun digging up these pre-loved clothes and accessories that he wanted to keep at it full time. Since he's been unsatisfied with the retail life, he left and started an Etsy shop, Harbors Vintage, which he's now expanded to pop up events around Honolulu.
You'll sometimes see him with his pop up tent at Art n Flea or other vendor events, and during the academic year he'll sometimes set up shop at UH Manoa's Campus Center. When you walk into his set up, feel free to go to the racks and peruse! But I recommend that you approach Arik if you're unsure what pieces would fit your style and let him get to know you. The beauty of vintage threads is that they can be versatile from being casual to dressed up. The overall vibe I get with Harbors Vintage is simply old school reliving the glory days in today's youth. But everyone and anyone, especially to those with an open mind and appreciation for the classics and funky throwbacks, can totally rock them regardless of age and gender.
Besides bringing old school styles in today's trend, I also love that Harbors Vintage is always active in replenishing unique merchandise so there's always something new. Each piece is ffound in thrift stores, people's closets, as well as during Arik's travels. He's got an amazing eye combined with persistence when scoping for brands like Nike, Levi's, Gucci, cool printed merchandise from cartoons like Disney or Looney Toons, even sports team jackets and hats!
